Rental FAQs

When are rental payments due? 

Room rental fees are due no later than the first day of each month. You can pay with check, cash, or credit card at the Front Desk, which is open from 9:30 am – 8:00 pm. Your first month’s rent and a security deposit are due before you move in.

Why is renter’s insurance required, and how much is it? 

We ask that you purchase standard Renter’s Insurance from Allstate. It costs between $12-15/month, lasts for 1 year, and protects us in case a renter causes a major accident like a fire. It also protects your personal belongings and stays with you if you should move.

Can I have overnight guests? 

Overnight guests are welcome at Nyingma Institute in accordance with our Guest Policy. Each resident is allowed to have an overnight guest for a maximum of three nights per six-month period. Guests are not permitted for more than three consecutive nights without a special exception. An appeal for an exception can be submitted to the Front Desk.  For those residents with a roommate, you must have her/his permission prior to hosting any overnight guests. In addition, you will need to notify the Front Desk one week in advance.

When are quiet hours? 

Creating noise that disrupts residents or neighboring community members at any time is unacceptable. No loud music or instruments please. In addition, residents are asked to be especially considerate during quiet hours from 10pm – 9am and during meditation sessions and classes, which are usually held from 6pm – 8:30pm on weekdays, and retreats which run from 10am – 5pm, and are held on both weekends and weekdays.

Can I cook in the kitchen? 

Use of the kitchen is generally limited, and completely off limits during meal preparation by our in-house chef:  9am – 12:30pm and 2pm – 5:30pm. A microwave is available for your use at any time. We ask that you clean up promptly and clear dishes immediately after use. There is a limited space available in the refrigerator for storage of personal food, and no freezer space available.

Can I use the common areas such as the dining room and lobby? 

We ask that these areas be reserved for retreatants and the general public who are here for classes.

Are bathrooms and showers shared? How many are there? 

Bathrooms and showers are shared but are separated by gender. There is a bathroom and a shower facility for women on the second floor, and a bathroom and shower facility for men on the third floor.

Can I use a space heater in my room?

No, we ask that space heaters not be used, as they are a fire hazard for our wiring system. There is built-in water-based heating which runs on a set schedule. Please speak with the Front Desk if you are cold so we can make sure the heating in your room is working.

Can I exchange bills for coins to do laundry with? 

Yes, you can exchange bills for quarters at the Front Desk.

Do you have a wireless network? 

Yes, we will provide you with the password.

Can I bring meat onto the premises? 

No, please do not bring leftovers with meat onto the property, or eat or prepare meat here. We are strictly vegetarian.

What’s your policy regarding alcohol, smoking, or drugs? 

We have a zero tolerance policy. We ask that you do not smoke, drink, or use drugs on the premises. We also ask that you conduct yourself appropriately for our environment, and avoid being strongly inebriated or disruptive. Please do not bring alcohol onto or store it on the premises.

Can I take classes? 

Starting in Spring 2017, we will have daily evening meditation sessions from 6:00pm – 6:45pm which are open to the public for a $5 donation. You are most welcome to join. If you are interested in our classes, please learn more at our main website –

Where can I park my car? 

Parking in our small private lot is available for an extra $100/month. If you park on the street, please read signs carefully to avoid tickets. As a standard precaution for parking in Berkeley, we suggest that you not store valuables like cameras, laptops, or tools in your car.
